Is it possible to counter an effect that sends your SW back with your SW's effect? I think I've seen people do it, I'm just not 100% sure it's legal.

Yes, as long as the SW has a direct counter in it. But you can't counter with anything extra if its source has been nulled or even if it has been destroyed or sent back.
