Season 4, Ep 1: A New Era

It has been many years since Calvin and the members of the Dragon Defenders defeated Queen Sayomi and Gragion Reaper. With the Six Attribute Crystals out of reach from anyone planning on using their powers, the world was once again safe. With such a long period of peace, science and technology went on to increase the quality of living. One of the most important inventions of this new era was the Contact Display System. This device, a pair of contacts that allowed a person to access the universal network as well as other digital systems, became frequently used by players of the galaxy's most popular sport, Bakugan Brawling. One place in particular was the center of it all, Championship City, the location of the new World Championship Arena. Championship City also became home to many famous brawlers from all over the galaxy. Every year, hundreds of brawlers would compete in the world's largest tournament: The Bakugan World Championship Tournament. This tournament hosted the greatest brawlers of this and other worlds. In the end only one brawler would remain and be crowned the Bakugan World Champion.

Now that Calvin and the others have retired from the brawling scene, a new hero steps up to the plate: Jason Cross. A Subterra brawler with high hopes an ambitions. He and his bakugan, Subterra Spikore, are determined to work their way to the top and become Bakugan World Champions. He and his team, the Nova Brawlers, a group of rag tag brawlers living on the outskirts of Championship City, plan on becoming the greatest team in the world. However, the road is long and arduous.

All three members of the Nova Brawlers have made it to the Final Sixteen, a mini tournament that is much more publicized than the preliminaries. However, all three members of their rival team, The Sky Reavers, have made to the Final Sixteen as well, and plan on knocking the Nova Brawlers out of the tournament. There are also many other high rank brawlers in the tournament who see the Nova Brawlers as easy opponents. Jason's match is up next as he takes on one of these high rank brawlers. Can he beat this opponent and prove the other contestants wrong? or will he fall out of the tournament in the first round?

Jason stepped into the elevator that led to the WC Arena. As the door closed, he exhaled. His fingers tapped the railing of the elevator as he slowly ascended. As the vessel continued its movement, Jason's anxiousness increased, and so did the tapping of his fingers. Soon the tapping became so frequent that Spikore, who was resting calmly on Jason's shoulder, started to be annoyed by his brawler's increasing nervousness.

"Dude..." Spikore spoke to his partner, "Could you please not do that? It's kind of driving me nuts." Unfortunately for Spikore, Jason wasn't listening, he was too busy thinking. He had the battle already formed in his head and he was trying to create a successful strategy. Different attacks and combos were floating around as Jason's tapping increased even more. This time, it was paired with some unintelligible words and phrases. "Maybe...so...if...strike.. shiel...cryst...slam....or what if....?" "Dude!" Spikore shouted, "Could you stop that? You're driving me nuts!"

Jason shook the cobwebs out of his head and looked at his partner with a distracted look. "Huh? Oh...yeah...sure. I was just thinking." He then proceeded to return to his "thinking." Not too happy about his brawler blowing him off, Spikore flew off of Jason's shoulder and hit the Subterra brawler in the head. "Ow! Hey, what was that about?" Spikore laughed as he flew back on his partner's shoulder. "Dude," he spoke to Jason, his voice now absolutely serious, "You're acting all spaced out. What's going on with you?" Jason scratched his head, realizing that he was acting kind of odd. "Oh. Sorry bud. I'm just a bit excited about this brawl, our opponent is supposed to be some sort of top ranked brawler, and I really don't want to be knocked out in the first round." Jason gave his bakugan a concerned look, "Do you really think we have a chance against this guy Spikore? I mean, these guys are the best of the best." ”So?” Spikore answered, ”Who cares? We’ll beat them all the same.”

The Subterra brawler nodded in response. Spikore was right, no matter who was on the other side of that arena, he and his bakugan would come out on top. The drudgingly slow elevator ride finally came to a halt indicated by a clear ring. The doors of the elevator opened, revealing the arena. Jason entered, letting the sound of thousands of brawling fans cheering from their seats. On the other side of the stadium, his opponent stood. “So,” Jason spoke, now in a much calmer state than when he was in the elevator, ”You’re who I have to beat? Then so be it. Setting Gate Card!” A flash of light appeared on Jason’s Contact Display System as he was shown a holographic list of his Gate Cards. He thought of the one he wanted and shouted, ”Gate Card Set!” A flash of brown light pulsed from the stadium floor as the Arena System recognized the set Gate Card.

Spikore floated over to Jason’s hand as Jason balled it into a fist and shouted, ”Bakugan Brawl!” The ball landed close to the middle of the Arena as a whirlwind of dust surrounded the ball. Spikore emerged from the dust storm as his brawler said, ”Bakugan Stand! Rise Subterra Spikore!” ”Alright!” Spikore shouted, ”Let’s do this Jason!” ”I couldn’t agree more, bud!”

Jason's opponent, Reoma Zikku, looked at Spikore and said "Surely this will be fun, Phoenix." Slayer Phoenix, who was sitting at Reoma's shoulder, said, "Most definitely, Reoma. Let's savor this moment, this will probably be the easiest brawl that we will get." Reoma nodded and grabbed his bakugan, throwing him onto the field as he shouted "Okay! Let's do this! Bakugan brawl! Arise Darkus Slayer Phoenix!" As Phoenix was thrown in, dark clouds appeared above the arena sending blots of lightning to the ground, closing in on Phoenix. Slowly the wings started to appear, then the legs, and finally, there was Phoenix flying high, staring at Spikore. Phoenix said, "This sure will be fun. Lets see what you have got, Spikore!"

"I agree," Jason responded, "Let's have fun with this. Gate Card Open! Perilous Sands!" Suddenly that ground changed from cold hard steel to desert sands. The sun glared off the ground, causing the sand to heat up and become almost burning to the touch. This, of course, didn't bother Spikore who loved the heat and sand. However, hot sand wasn't the true nature of the gate. A small explosion was heard as a geyser of burning sand shot up from the ground at Phoenix. Another geyser shot up into the air, followed by more.

Spikore laughed, "What's the matter Reoma? Sand in your shorts?" He turned to look at his partner, "Alright, Jason. Give me something to hit 'em with." Jason nodded, "Not a problem!" His eyes flashed light brown as an ability card was uploaded on his CDS. "Ability Activate! Vicious Arsenal!" "Aw, yeah!" Spikore shouted as his favorite ability was played, "What toy do I get to play with this time?" Jason looked at Reoma, hoping that his opponent wasn't too confused. "You see," Jason explained, Vicious Arsenal allows me to pick any of my cards in my bakupack, and put it in play as a weapon for Spikore. It doesn't give him any sort of G-Power boost, but an extra weapon always comes in handy." Jason looked through his list of cards on his CDS, "Hmmmm. Here's a good one! Support Weapon, Launch! Flash Razor!" An orb of light brown light appeared in Spikore's right palm. The orb morphed into a gleaming, one-handed sword.

"Now!" Jason shouted, feeling the rush of battle get to him already, "Go get 'em, Spikore!" "With pleasure!" Spikore responded and took off towards Slayer Phoenix. He easily dodges the geysers and even flew straight through some. Instead of being in pain, the burning sand felt soothing to him. It was as if he was back home, flying through sand geysers for fun. Sword in hand, Spikore charged towards Slayer Phoenix, hoping to hit the Darkus Bakugan with his blade.

(Gate Card: Perilous Sands: Change enemy bakugan description to "This bakugan may only use the cards of "____". "_____" being whatever bakugan that the user of this card owns. Double the user's effects and G-Power. Your bakugan may only use my Gargylon's cards now.

Ability Card: Vicious Arsenal User may turn one card in their bakupack into a SW. User may throw out 2 SW. Transfer 200G per SW in play or take control of the gate card. I can turn two and throw out 4. (However I'm only throwing out 2.) I pick Flash Razor and Soul Shield and throw them both out for 0G each. Next I choose to transfer 400G per SW in play so I transfer 800G.)

Slayer Phoenix quickly dodged the sand geysers. He luckily got out of the way just in time as they fired hot sand at him from all directions. "Ha!" He said, "You really think that's gonna bring me down?" As soon as he stopped speaking, Phoenix saw Spikore rush at him with his gleaming sword. "Uh-oh. Phoenix! Get out of there!" Reoma shouted. Obeying his brawler, Phoenix swiftly moved just in time as the sword was swung at him. However, Phoenix did not like the heat and the sun and it was starting to affect him. Reoma was somewhat impressed. He wasn't expecting such an attack from Jason at the beginning of the brawl "Ok Phoenix!" He shouted to his partner, "It's time to kick things off!" Phoenix grunted in acknowledgement as he dodged another of those deadly geysers with a smooth barrel roll. "Ability Activate! System Failure!" "Oh yeah! I am surely gonna like this!" As this was said, Phoenix Shot a beam out of his mouth that went up into the air. The beam split into several beams that rained down on the gate card, intending to destroy it. Suddenly Phoenix charged up another shot, this time it was aimed at Spikore as he said, "Now, take this!" Reoma laughed as the beam once again split into several beams towards Spikore. "How you like that, Jason?" He taunted. His eyes flashed purple as he started to activate another ability. "Ability Activate, Phoenix Strike! Phoenix fists started burning purple flames as he rushed straight for Spikore, ready to give him a massive punch.

"Whoa!" Spikore shouted, "He's gonna destroy the gate!" Sure enough, the beams from Slayer Phoenix's System Failure attack crashed into the gate card, cracking it and causing it to shatter. He could hear the Darkus bakugan's brawler taunting his own brawler, making him frustrated. The brown dragon slash at the air with his sword, trying to seem more intimidating. "Darn it all! That's it! Taste steel!" He rushed at the Darkus Bakugan, hoping not to miss with his next attack.

The words "Ability Activate!" along with the attack that came with it, made Jason nervous. Now, not only were the beams rushing at Spikore, but Slayer Phoenix as well. The Darkus bakugan meant to knock his foe out with one hit. To make matters worse, Reoma and his bakugan planned on finishing the brawl early with a massive punch from Slayer Phoenix's Phoenix Strike ability. Jason grimaced, this brawl was off to a bad start. However, if he did this just right, he could turn the tables in one fell swoop.

"Spikore!" Jason shouted, not a hundred percent sure if his bakugan was listening. "I need you to dodge the attack! Quickly!" Jason wasn't sure, but he though he saw his bakugan nod as he accelerated, then tilted his left wing, causing him to barrel roll. He managed to just barely dodge the incoming beams and held up his sword. He rushed at Slayer Phoenix, who still had a powerful punch with Spikore's name on it. Spikore readied his sword and grabbed it with two hands, using it to try block the Phoenix Strike attack. As soon as Slayer Phoenix got close enough Jason shouted one more command, "Now! Weapon Switch, Soul Shield Activate!" Spikore's gleaming sword started to shine even brighter. Spikore radiated a strange and unearthly glow as he was powered up by the weapon. As he flew, a series of hot sand geysers shot up from the ground. The sword instantly turned into a shield as Spikore planned on ramming into his foe.

Jason laughed, more out of relief that he had managed to avoid that attack than out of taunting. "You didn't really think that you could get rid of us that easily, did you? Keep that up and Spikore and I will be champs in no time."

(I activated my SW Soul Shield {I threw it out last turn remember? You never negated Vicious Arsenal}. User is protected from all enemy effects. Double user's G-Power and reduce enemy G-Power to 0G. My effects are doubled so I quadruple it.)

Reoma nodded, he was impressed again by this newcomer. However, he wasn't going to let this kid's fancy moves phase him. "Nice technique, but you'll have to better if you want to beat me. Ready Phoenix?" The Darkus Bakugan screeched in response. "You bet! Let's take these newbies out!" Reoma's eyes flashed as he shouted another command to his CDS. "Special Ability Activate! Dark Storm Rising!" From what seemed like out of nowhere, dark clouds rolled in above the arena. The clouds rumbled and flashed as bolt's of lightning flashed, striking the already charging Slayer Phoenix as he started to glow purple. The two bakugan collided. Phoenix's punch was now so powered up by that last ability, that one punch would destroy the Soul Shield. "Ha!" Shouted Phoenix, "I dare you to try to take this attack on!"

(Dark Storm Rising: Negate all enemy effects, I gain 400G for each card that I played before this.)

"Gahhh!" Spikore shouted as the punch from Slayer Phoenix's boosted Phoenix Strike attack smashed his Soul Shield into tiny pieces. Thankfully, he only took a small portion of the damage, but still..."Wow, what a punch. Jason!" Spikore shouted to his partner. "We need a counterattack. A good one!" Understanding his Bakugan's request. Jason quickly responded. "All right! Ability Activate, Crash Negative!"

"Charging Up!" Spikore shouted as his body was engulfed in golden brown flames. The rest of Slayer Phoenix's punch was coming, and this time, Spikore would be ready. The punch connected, but Spikore caught it with his hand. Even with the boost of power that Spikore was getting, he was pushed back by the sheer force of the Dark Storm Rising boosted Phoenix Strike. "Grr...I've got....gotta....stop...you!" Jason shouted loudly at his partner, hoping that cheering him on would help. "Come on, Spikore! You can do this! This is your fight, don't let Slayer Phoenix psyche you out!" "Yes..." Spikore grunted, "I will...do this...now!"

Spikore gripped his opponent's fist with the other hand and started to turn to the right. The flames on Spikore's body grew larger as the Subterra bakugan started to rotate, spinning in circles, intending on dragging Slayer Phoenix with him. Spikore started to spin for a bit longer until he let go, letting Slayer Phoenix's body free, hoping that it would crash into the ground.

(Crash Negative: Negate all enemy Abilities. Opponent's cannot increase their G-Power. Double your G-Power. I quadruple it.)

"No!" Reoma shouted in as his bakugan was flung to the ground. Slayer Phoenix was crashing towards the ground, ready to hit the floor with a sound that would echo throughout the entire arena. The Darkus brawler balled up his fists, not ready to give in just yet. "You think that'll stop us? Think again! Ability Activate! Dark Feather Storm!" Slayer Phoenix's wings crackled with electricity as he was able to flip his body upright and land safely "Now for our counterattack!" The Bakugan flexed his wings as dozens of feathers crackling with electricity were flung towards Spikore. Reoma had a wide grin on his face. "I've got you now!" He assured Jason, "You see, Dark Feather Storm works as a defensive and offensive move. These little feathers are actually heat-seeking missiles, so using that impressive speed of yours wont help? And you know what else? This Ability allows Slayer Phoenix even more strength to execut another attack! Get him, Phoenix!" This time, both of Slayer Phoenix's fists were set ablaze with purple flame as he charged at Spikore. "Take this!" Shouted the Darkus Bakugan.

(Dark Feather Storm: I am protected and I loop an effect.
I loop the effect of Warmech Destra: Negate all enemy cards and switch out an opponent's bakugan with one in their bakupack. I switch Spikore out with Gargylon.)

"Wow," said Spikore, "These guy sure don't know the meaning of giving up. It's a good thing we don't know it either. Come on, Jason! Let's beat 'em down!" Jason nodded, "Agreed. Brace your self Reoma, you're about to get hammered." Knowing what was coming up next, Spikore shouted, "Aw yeah! Let's hit 'em with all we've got!" Jason's eyes flashed a golden brown as he shouted, "Ability Activate! Archaion Buster!"

"Yes! Time to pull out the big guns!" said Spikore as a golden brown orb appeared in his hand. The orb started to grow larger and larger as Slayer Phoenix and the barrage of feathers approached him. He put his other hand on the orb as it got larger. It started to gleam with an unearthly radiance. As the Darkus Bakugan got even closer. Spikore removed his hand from the orb and started holding the massive sphere with one hand. He then let out a battle roar as he flung the orb towards his opponent. It caught and disintegrated all of the feathers and was now heading towards Slayer Phoenix. "Counterattack this!" Spikore challenged.

(Archaion Buster: Negate all enemy effects. Change enemy bakugan description to "This bakugan may only use the cards of "____". "_____" being whatever bakugan that the user of this card owns. Reduce enemy G-Power to 0G. I'll just say Gargylon again.)

"Hah!" Replied Slayer Phoenix as he charged towards Spikore. He had two punches with the Subterra bakugan's name on it. "Taste the fury of my fists, punk!" As Slayer Phoenix rushed towards his foe, his heat-seeking missiles were greeted with a massive orb of golden-brown light. Reoma gulped nervously. The attack was massive, too massive even for his bakugan. He had made the mistake of letting a rookie like this catch him off guard. "Darn it!" Reoma shouted as the orb threatened to collide with his bakugan, "Hurry Phoenix! Get out of there!" But it was too late as the orb smashed into the Darkus Bakugan. Slayer Phoenix survived the attack, but things weren't looking good as he started to crash towards the ground. He landed on the ground with a thud, turning into ball form as the sound echoed throughout the arena. Slayer Phoenix returned to Reoma's hand. Reoma, who wasn't too happy about his situation, clenched his fists and glared angrily at Jason. "Alright, no more going easy on the new guy. It's time that I teach you a lesson. Gate Card Set!" The floor pulsed with a purple light as the Gate was set.
"Now! Bakugan Brawl! Rise Darkus Slayer Phoenix!" The thunder clouds appeared again, revealing the giant bird as he landed on the ground, ready for his opponent.

Jason was smiling as Spikore returned to his hand. He waved to some of the fans as they cheered him on, "Jason! Jason! Jason!" However, when the next round started, his demeanor changed. Just because he won this round didn't mean that he had won the brawl. His opponent would now be even more desperate to win. If he was to make it to the next round, he had to start getting serious. "I couldn't agree more, Reoma. Let's do this!" He threw Spikore onto the Gate Card, the tornado of dust heralding the entrance of his bakugan. "Bakugan Brawl! Rise, Subterra Spikore! Let's go!" "Aw Yeah!" Spikore shouted, "You better go all out this time Phoenix, I don't want to get the next round unless I have to fight for it! Right Jason? Jason gave his Bakugan a thumbs-up "You bet Spikore!" He turned to look at his opponent. "Show me what you got, Reoma!"

"Hmph," Reoma retorted, "You're about to see what happens when you mess with the Brawling Champion of India. I didn't beat every brawler in my home country just to be beaten by the likes of you, and don't you forget it. Ready to show them our power, Phoenix?" "Most definitely, you're going to regret asking us to show you what we've got Jason! Reoma's eyes flashed purple, indicating that he was activating an Ability Card. "Ability Activate! Blazing Buster!" "Taste flames, Spikore!" Shouted Phoenix as he shot purple fireball at the Subterra Bakugan. The fireball seemed to be in the shape of a Phoenix as it charged towards Spikore. Reoma smiled as his attack was executed, "So? Come on Jason. Let's see what you've got."

(Blazing Buster: Double's my Gs and Prevents opponents from using normal abilities.)

"Dang," Jason breathed. His opponent certainly was no pushover. He had executed a move that was so quick, it was impossible to stop with any normal ability. He would have to pull out something strong early on. That wasn't what he wanted. But he had to do it. "Spikore, let's stop this move dead in it's tracks! Ready, bud?" "You bet," The subterra bakugan responded, "Give me some juice bro!" Jason nodded, "Alright! Special Ability Activate! Core Terra!"

"Got it!" Responded Spikore as his eyes flashed. He thrust a hand towards the purple, phoeinx-shaped fireball as he shouted, "Gaia, grant me the strength to defeat those who do not follow the Path of Earth." After he recited his prayer, a flash of light came from his hand, emitting a ray of light the hit the Fireball, turning it to stone and causing it to plummet to the floor. The attack was smashed into thousands of tiny pieces as it collided with the ground. Spikore smiled as he murmured, "Thank you."

Jason let out a smirk. Spikore was always the religious type, but whether it was because it was Spikore's own power, or the fact that his prayers actually worked, Jason never asked how Spikore was able to do that. There were many things he didn't know about his best friend, but he knew that if he needed to know, Spikore would tell him. "What do you think, Reoma? Is that impressive enough?" Jason asked his opponent. Without waiting for a response he continued, "No? That's okay, Core Terra gives Spikore the strength to unleash another ability. Spikore! Justice Gauntlet!" Spikore roared as his right fist started to glow and was covered in some sort of extra armor. The bakugan plummeted downwards, letting his fist collide against the ground, hoping to destroy the dormant Gate Card before it was activated.

(Core Terra: Turn all enemy cards on the field into SWs. All enemy SW's are returned to their owner's bakupacks. Loop one effect from your backpack.
I loop Justice Gauntlet: Destroy the enemy Gate Card. Replace the enemy Gate Card with one of yours OR you may turn one of your SWs into a Gate Card and use it instead. I'm using a Gate Card.)

Reoma frowned as his opponent stopped his Blazing Buster attack like that. To his dismay, he watched as Spikore destroyed his dormant Gate Card with his Justice Gauntlet technique. "Hey!" he shouted at his opponent, "I didn't even get to use that yet!" He shook his head. Jason was trying to keep him from getting the chance of pulling off anything huge. No matter, he would just have to keep trying. "Alright, Phoenix! Attack!" "Got it!" Shouted Phoenix as he charged towards Spikore. "Give me all you got punk!" Slayer Phoenix pulled back a fist, ready to strike."

Jason grimaced at this new development. This was an interesting tactic. What was Reoma planning? "An old fashioned fist fight, huh? What do you say, Spikore, feel like giving it a shot?" Spikore nodded, it couldn't hurt. "Why not? It's all in good fun anyways." Jason laughed nervously, "Hey! We still have a tournament to win, bud. Get your head in the game!" Spikore laughed, muched to the dismay of his brawler. "You worry too much. I'm not gonna let you down so easily." He turned to his charging opponent. "Now, where were we? Oh, right." Spikore took off into the air, ready to hit his foe from an angle. Knowing that Slayer Phoenix probably packed a bigger punch than he ever could, Spikore decided to try to hit his Darkus opponent with a series of rapid punches and kicks. "Time for a real brawl bird-brain!"
